Novosibirsk regional authorities have discussed the transportation of soon-to-be-decommissioned submarine «Novosibirsk» from the Murmansk Region. They want to mount the 73-metre-long vessel on the waterfront of the River Ob using donations from businesses, according to a statement from the Government of Novosibirsk press office, which Sib.fm’s correspondent examined on 21 March.

The submarine «Novosibirsk» is affiliated with the city and conscripts from the Novosibirsk Region serve on it. However, the possibility of withdrawing the submarine from the Navy and mounting the hull on the banks of the Ob as part of the «Naval Glory» memorial complex is already being considered, officials report. The relocation of the submarine was discussed at a meeting with Andrei Ksenzov, Deputy Governor of the Novosibirsk Region.

Participants in the meeting agreed that transportation of the affiliated submarine «Novosibirsk» from the Murmansk Region would require «extra-budgetary funds». Estimation of the moving costs has already begun, the statement goes on to say.

The complex, which the boat will be a part of, should help «make Novosibirsk more appealing to tourists and be an image-building project for the entire region,» added a government spokesman.

However, a survey of residents will be conducted to assess the feasibility of the project, officials promised. In addition, citizens will be consulted on how best to make use of the submarine «Novosibirsk».

B-401 «Novosibirsk» is a Russian diesel-electric submarine, the first ship of Project 877 Paltus (Kilo according to NATO classification). The boat has a crew of 57, is 72.6 metres long and is armed with 533mm torpedoes and Biryuza ZM-54E1 missiles. She was launched on 15 March 1984.
