Three die in crash near Tyumen involving Peking to Paris rally car
One of the participants in the Peking to Paris classic car challenge has died in a head-on collision with an unrelated car on the motorway between Omsk and Tyumen, an eyewitness told Sib.fm's correspondent on 12 June.
According to the eyewitness, a passenger car darted into the oncoming lane and collided with the rally vehicle head-on. A man and child were killed in the car, and a female passenger is in a serious condition. One of the vintage car's crew died, the second received minor injuries.
Organisers will not report the identity of the rally participant until they have notified the family of the deceased.
The accident occurred 211 kilometres from the city of Tyumen.
According to preliminary information from the regional department of the Ministry of the Interior, a Volkswagen Polo en route from Surgut, driven by a resident of the Kurgan Region, crossed into oncoming traffic. The car collided with a Chevrolet C 10 pick-up truck that was taking part in the rally.
"The 31-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Polo and a baby died as a result of the collision, a female passenger is in intensive care. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 46-year-old woman from the UK, was also killed," added a Ministry of the Interior source.
