Tenth Monstration in Novosibirsk attracts record number of participants 05/4/2014, 20:58
Having undergone the usual ordeal to get approval from the authorities, Monstration 2014 took place in Novosibirsk. Despite the fact that last year's monstration was announced as an anniversary edition, organiser Artyom Loskutov considers this one to be the tenth. Almost five thousand people marched three and a half kilometres – from Kalinin Square to Lenin Square.
In 2010, Monstration took place in Simferopol with one banner: "We're going to Soviet [Street], then turning off"
As is traditional, the authorities tried to dub Monstration 2014 a political event. But newly elected Communist mayor Anatoly Lokot supported the procession and even let the monstrators onto Lenin Square. The organisers of the event hoped to finish the demonstration on the stage set up near the Opera and Ballet Theatre, but they weren't allowed. Artyom Loskutov showed the performers there his middle finger, while the monstrators started to flock to their truck.
"There are a lot of us – maybe as many as 200 people. We're here, and the people with the stage are there. And that's good. And that's the way it always will be!" declared Loskutov from the truck.
80 people took part in the first Monstration in Novosibirsk in 2004
However, he later admitted in an interview with Sib.fm's correspondent that he would like to stop "all this", but doesn't know who he would pass the reins to.
From 2010 to 2013, the Novosibirsk Monstration was attended by about three thousand people, in 2014 – about five thousand. According to politician Ilya Ponomaryov, this year's Monstration in Novosibirsk attracted more participants than the May Day demonstration.

There are more and more participants every year, but interesting slogans, as noted by participants and spectators, are harder and harder to find. On the other hand, this tenth procession will be remembered for a marriage proposal made by a young man to his girlfriend in front of the 5000-strong crowd.
